Showtime has announced that infidelity drama The Affair has been renewed for a fifth and final season, which should premiere next year.
“We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair’s subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity,” said Gary Levine, President of Programming Showtime Networks. “Sarah Treem (co-creator) has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season.”
From Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi (In Treatment), The Affair follows the destruction of two marriages thanks to an extramarital affair and the psychological and emotional repercussions this new development has for all four individuals. Starring Maura Tierney (ER), Dominic West (The Wire), Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek), and Ruth Wilson (Luther), the series is most known for utilizing the fragile nature of memory in its storytelling, as all four of the main characters have their storylines depicted from their perspectives.
As of now, The Affair is one of two Showtime dramas that are ending next year, the other being Homeland. With Ray Donovan and Shameless getting up there in age, though, it’s conceivable that Showtime could conclude another veteran in 2019 given that they have City on a Hill, Halo, and Your Honor on tap.
The fourth season finale of The Affair is set to air Sunday, August 19th at 9:00. You can check out a preview for the next episode, where Helen goes to Joshua Tree looking for answers and Noah’s adventure with Anton is altered by one phone call, below.
