When Jane landed her promotion at Scarlet, she thought she would finally get the chance to write the hard-hitting pieces she always wanted. She would bring a more serious, politically-minded perspective to the magazine and use her platform to advance the dialogue on issues that are important to women. However, while Scarlet is more than just a “typical” women’s magazine and does feature pieces that venture outside the love/sex/fitness bubble, it still has a constituency to serve that wants articles with a lighter tone and aspirational content to balance out the more woke content in its arsenal. And that means that newer writers have to provide this baseline content before they build up enough of a reputation to write what they want.

On the second episode of The Bold Type‘s two-episode series premiere, Jane is given the magazine’s sex column for a month after its regular contributor begins work on a pornography-based article. Not only does the prospect of writing something lighter like this disappoint Jane, who isn’t looking to be pigeonholed as a female writer who can’t do more substantive work, it scares her to death since she has yet to have an orgasm, either by herself or with a partner. Someone who writes a sex column is expected to be fairly experienced, in touch with their bodies, and have little to no inhibition when it comes to talk about sex, so Jane isn’t really the one to be giving people tips on how to have better sex or the best ways to please their partner. There is an angle here, with Jane writing about how not having had an orgasm impacts her confidence in the bedroom/attitude toward sex and the fallout it’s caused in her relationships, but she’s just coming off an intensely personal piece and understandably won’t want to bare everything once it again. Yet being a writer is all about being fearless and if she can’t quickly find a way to have an orgasm after a years-long dry spell, she might have to write something speaking to all the women in her position using her experience as inspiration.

Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Kat begins questioning her identity after spending more time with Adena, while Sutton questions whether being at Scarlet for the long-term is something she wants to do.

The two-hour series premiere of The Bold Type is set to air Tuesday, July 11th at 9:00 on Freeform. You can check out photos and sneak peeks from the first hour, which was previewed following an episode of Pretty Little Liars, here.

Will Jane overcome her struggle with the sex column and make her deadline? Could Kat be at the dawn of a personal awakening she didn’t know was coming? What do you think is stopping Sutton from jumping at this latest opportunity at upward advancement?
