Supergirl Is Casting James Olsen, Toyman, Cyborg Superman & Cat Grant

TV Line has gotten a hold of details about four more characters being cast for CBS’ Supergirl pilot.

These characters come from the larger world of Superman comics.

So who else are they looking for? Here’s what we have to look forward to, per TV Line’s report.

For Cat Grant, Supergirl is “eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as ‘J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour’.” Cat Grant was played by Tracy Scoggins in Lois & Clark; in Smallville, Keri Lynn Pratt played a very annoying version of the character. There was a version of Cat Grant in the Arrow pilot script, but the character was later cut.

Then there’s James Olsen. They’re open about the ethnicity of this guy, and he’s in his late 20s/early 30s. TV Line posted the character description as “a smart, worldly and attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.” Is there a timeline change and this is the familiar Jimmy Olsen? Or his dad? Olsen has been played by a number of actors in the past, including Jack Larson (The Adventures of Superman), Marc McClure (the Reeve Superman movies and Supergirl the movie), and Michael Landes and Justin Whalin (Lois & Clark). In Smallville, Aaron Ashmore played Henry James Olsen as well as his brother, who we think may have also had the nickname “Jimmy.” (In the “Finale” he is just called “Olsen.”)

Winslow Schott is known as the Toyman to readers of comics. Chris Gauthier played him on Smallville while Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson!) played him on Lois & Clark. On Supergirl, he’s got the nickname of “Wynn” and he’s a twentysomething tech wiz and Comic-Con stalwart who works as a programmer for CatCo, unaware of his potential. He’s not aware of his next door neighbor Kara’s secret, but he still carries a torch for her.

Hank Henshaw who readers of the comics know as the “Cyborg Superman” is an upstart CIA agent who grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. “Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind,” the description says. Wanna bet Kara’s “sister” Alex works for the DEO too? Henshaw hasn’t appeared in live-action before but he did appear in the Smallville Season 11 comic book series.
