At Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, Freeform demon hunting drama Shadowhunters picked up the award for Outstanding Drama Series, overcoming considerable competition from the likes of The OA, How to Get Away with Murder, and Orphan Black on the way to its victory. Past winners of the award include Sense8, Smash, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Returning for the second half of its second season on Monday, June 5th, Shadowhunters features a love story between bisexual warlock Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) and gay Shadowhunter Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario), with the focus being on the latter coming to terms with living his truth and how the former’s lengthy and adventurous life can be intimidating for a partner who has a fraction as much life experience. However, in the spring finale, the two exchanged their “I love you”s for the first time, meaning that they’re willing to work past whatever obstacles might be in their way to protect and nurture the connection they share. But even with Magnus and Alec embracing their feelings for one another, the tension between the Shadowhunters and Downworlders threatens to bleed into their relationship and disrupt the very foundation they’re trying to build in order to ensure a strong, healthy partnership.
The GLAAD Media Awards honor films, television shows, musicians, and works of journalism that fairly and accurately represent the LGBT community and issues relevant to the community. The second GLAAD Media Award ceremony will be held in New York City on Saturday, May 6th.
