Deadline is reporting that West Wing alum Jimmy Smits has joined NBC legal drama pilot Bluff City Law.

From Dean Georgaris (The Brave) and Michael Aguilar (Kidding), Bluff City Law follows legendary lawyer Elijah Strait (Smits) and his brilliant daughter Sydney Keller (Caitlin McGee) as they head an elite Memphis law firm that specializes in the most controversial landmark civil rights cases. The series follows Elijah and Sydney as they take on the toughest David-and-Goliath cases while navigating their complicated relationship.

In addition to his role on the NBC political drama, Smits has appeared on the likes of How to Get Away with Murder, Sons of Anarchy, and NYPD Blue. If Bluff City Law goes to series, it would be his third go-around with an NBC legal drama following L.A. Law and short-lived Outlaw.

Bluff City Law is part of a drama pilot slate for NBC that includes terminal illness drama Council of Dads; conspiracy thriller Emergence; Lincoln, a series adaptation of The Bone Collector; Prism, where every episode is told through the perspective of a different key person involved in a murder trial; and musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
