ABC has officially ordered its fourth and fifth comedy pilots for 2019-20 in an untitled multi-cam starring Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) and Katey Sagal’s Nana.
Based on the lives of Toure Roberts and Sarah-Jakes Roberts, with Saladin Patterson (The Last O.G.) writing the pilot, the Odom comedy follows a married couple who run a modern ministry together as they attempt to balance their professional pressure with blending their four combined children into one family unit. It’s the first multi-cam that ABC has ordered a pilot for this development season.
From Lon Zimmet (I’m Sorry), Nana tells the story of a recently widowed father forced to call upon his brash mother-in-law (Sagal) to help raise her two granddaughters. The series is said to be a hybrid comedy, so it’ll be similar to How I Met Your Mother with being shot like a single cam and sounding like a multi-cam.
The Odom comedy and Nana join a pilot slate for ABC that includes Happy Accident, which stars Vanessa Williams and Matt Walsh; Woman Up, about two teen moms who have gotten their children off to graduation and will now embrace the youth they never got to enjoy; and an untitled family comedy starring Hannah Simone (New Girl) as a broke thirtysomething whose bond with her father evolves when he tells her he’s separating from her mother.
