The wave of CW cancellations continues today, as it’s now official: The CW has cancelled Legacies, meaning that after the June 16 finale, the TVD era of The CW is over.
Ratings-wise, the show would lose a bit of its Walker lead-in on Thursdays, but still, the show had a large dedicated fan base eager to see Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) and the characters she would interact with week in and week out.
The Vampire Diaries franchise started in 2009 at a time when The CW wasn’t very focused on genre hits; Melrose Place was their big swing that year, and some wrote the show off as a Twilight ripoff even though the Vampire Diaries book series by L.J. Smith actually came first. But, the talents of creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec as well as a dynamic cast made the show a surprise hit – one that pushed through to three series on the network.
The final run of three episodes of Legacies will begin airing on Thursday, June 2; details about what is now the series finale can be found here.
