According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pretty Little Liars alum Lucy Hale has been tapped to star in The CW’s Riverdale spinoff pilot Katy Keene. Her Katy is a bold, big-hearted personal shopper at a luxury department store who dreams of being a fashion designer.
Described as a musical dramedy that takes place following the events of Riverdale, Katy Keene follows Veronica’s 20-something fashionista friend Katy and her aspiring artist friends in New York City as they try to make it on Broadway, on the runway, and in the recording studio. This marks the second spinoff of Riverdale, joining Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was previously in development at The CW before the streamer gave it a two-season order. Katy Keene hails from Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi.
In addition to her role on the ABC Family/Freeform drama, Hale’s television credits include Life Sentence, Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, and How I Met Your Mother. She joins a cast that includes Camille Hyde (American Vandal), Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens), Jonny Beauchamp (Penny Dreadful), Julia Chan (Saving Hope), and Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale).
Katy Keene is part of a CW pilot slate that includes Jane the Virgin spinoff Jane the Novela; DC-verse spinoff Batwoman; new takes on Nancy Drew and The Lost Boys; and Glamorous, centering on a gender non-conforming YouTuber who stumbles into a job at a cosmetics company.
