The last broadcast domino from the 2019-20 season has fallen, as The CW has officially cancelled Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene.
The news comes close to two months after its season finale and around six weeks following its debut on HBO Max. The CW initially opted to delay a renewal decision on Katy Keene to see if it could build an audience on streaming, extending the actor’s options until June 30th and, recently, July 31st in the meantime. However, per Deadline, the series received very little streaming bump, with its audience paling in comparison to fellow CW newbies Batwoman and Nancy Drew.
With the actors still under contract, Warner Bros. is said to be in the market for a new home for Katy Keene. Yet an uninspiring digital performance on HBO Max, the most logical second home considering that it’s under the same corporate umbrella as Katy‘s production studio, could make landing a second season difficult, even with the 13 scripts produced thanks to The CW’s pre-premiere order.
Katy Keene is given the distinction of being the only 2019-20 CW cancellation. The network gave pre-announced final seasons to Arrow, The 100, and Supernatural while renewing almost every series on its slate in a mass renewal circa January. Due to coronavirus interrupting production, Supernatural will return in the fall to finish out its final season.
