CBS has cancelled freshman comedy Happy Together, it was confirmed today.
As a new fall show that didn’t get a back nine episode extension, the writing has been on the wall for a while for Happy Together. The show wasn’t a bad performer necessarily, but CBS needed to make room for Man with a Plan and had too many dramas to think about expanding its comedy reach again, so its low priority status kept it at 13 episodes. Had it been two or three seasons in pulling these type of numbers, the network likely would’ve carried it to syndication seeing as how they own it and star Damon Wayans Jr. was highly sought after last pilot season.
From Tim McAuliffe (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) and Austen Earl (9JKL), Happy Together followed entertainment industry accountant Jake (Damon Wayans Jr.) and designer Claire (Amber Stevens West), a thirty-something couple who feels stuck in a dull, entirely too comfortable routine. Their boredom quickly dissipates, though, when young pop star Cooper James (Felix Mallard), a client of Jake’s, comes to live with them.
In addition to Wayans, West, and Mallard, Happy Together starred Stephnie Weir (MadTV), Victor Williams (The King of Queens), and Chris Parnell (Archer).
The series finale of Happy Together aired in January on CBS.
