Trade publications are reporting that Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights fame has been tapped to play Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO Original Lanterns based on the Green Lantern comic books from DC.

The project is said to be like True Detective with the Hal Jordan Green Lantern being a more grizzled veteran paired with a younger Lantern named John Stewart. The role of Stewart has not yet been cast. The pair team up to solve an Earth-bound murder mystery, and it should be tied to DC’s new film universe.

While most know Chandler best from Friday Night Lights, he’s been a favorite around these parts going all the way back to his CBS fantasy series Early Edition. That show lasted four seasons on the network.

With the #1 role snapped up, attention is now going toward the other series lead. It is said they are casting a “young, fresh-faced actor” to play the John Stewart role.

Hal Jordan made his first appearance in DC Comics’ Showcase #22 back in 1959. John Stewart, one of comics’ first African-American superheroes, made his debut in late 1971.
