The “It Girl”…
Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) is the “It Girl” of the Upper East Side – her entrance into the show starts with her return to the Manhattan and it’s dramatically environment. Since then, Serena has been looking to change her life, to kill the image as former queen bee, party girl and the girl with everything- to become a woman that can be taken seriously.
While she wants to forget the past and move on, people behind her back aren’t as willingly to let things go and she has been a victim through the series from different villains and at the same time, she is Gossip Girl’s #1 target for her followers. Sometimes the journey of being the woman she wants to be, gets in the way when she acts like the younger teenage girl that she used to be – an inner fight with herself and her environment, she can’t catch a break. Currently in the war against Gossip Girl, Serena works as writer for Nate’s news company “Spectator” but recent events has put our beloved “it girl” in a corner as Nate made a 180. With her BFF Blair getting married in addition being the maid of honor plus having her feelings once again for “Lonely Boy” – it looks like that S might have a tough night and if our beloved girl of gossip hasn’t got sloppy by tonight, someone might be the topic of a blast – S herself.
Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), Queen of the Upper East Side and perhaps one of the shows most complicated characters. Throughout the series, Blair has always driven to be a strong and powerful woman, who knows what she wants and really doesn’t let anyone walk on her as she rules as the Queen Bee but she is challenged – by different men in her life, by the one person that she has reunited to most with, Chuck Bass, who has a common interest for scheming and ruling. She tries beside that, also to find her place in society as a powerful woman that she is but personally, the way that her relationships changes, I see her searching on what she wants to do as a career, blocked by the complications in her social life. Blair and Serena takes a trip to Paris, where things changes when Blair meets Louis, royalty of Monaco and develops a relationship that returns at the end of the season where he proposes to her which she says yes to.
As “Chair” goes through once again a complicated situation, Chuck sacrifices his feelings for her and convinces her to merry Louis as he is a man that can give her the happiness that she deserves. So what has happened to Queen Bee since then? Besides of getting pregnant and losing the baby in a car accident, she has started to see that the prince might be an evil frog at the inside, as his jealousy for the relationship between Chuck and Blair, has made him done some scheming of his own. At the same time, as B and C almost reunites again – a car accident makes our beloved Queen B to make a pact with God himself, when Manhattan’s bad boy was between life and death, in exchange for his survival, she would fulfill her promise to her beloved prince. But can New York’s Queen B really commit to a marriage as a princess when the roses for a bad boy, still are red for him? I guess we’ll see tonight when the priest says “If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together – let them speak now or forever hold their peace”
Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) the “Lonely Boy” from Brooklyn, the boy that didn’t come from a rich family, who went to have become part of that world as his father, Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle) found his love again for Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford). Dan becomes the man in Serena’s life as she returned to the Upper East Side with a goal to change into a better person and becomes a positive influence on her. Their relationship has been at different status through the series run; step-siblings, and most of the times really close friends but they have had their drama as well of course. He focuses on dealing with collages, his career as an author in addition being a good friend, son and big brother for his little sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen) who becomes a smaller part of his life when she left New York.
Dan’s career as an author is at this point facing a good and a bad direction thanks to his former BFF, Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szhor) who get his book (that was never supposed to be found) “Inside” published, that is based on his life and the people in it. He eventually steps out of the shadows and reveals himself as the author of the book; it leaded to more drama with the people in his life as they were disappointed for different reasons. He struggles with his new-found feelings towards Blair but let’s himself be a person for her to lean on. With hope of writing books not based on “Inside”, Dan faces the pressure of writing again and also having to fake a relationship with Serena for Blair’s sake. So is “Lonely Boy” really suitable with everything that he is going through with? I would actually call him “Troubled Boy”.
Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) started as Manhattan’s bad boy, who drinks and slept with basically every attractive woman that he met. As the show goes on, our beloved bad boy starts changing, from getting his feelings for Blair, to becoming a business man just like his father (who died in Season 2) for Bass Industries. He starts going from being a self-centered and dirty minded teenager to a more mature young man with influences from his beloved ones – but at the same time, he remains a bad boy with the dramatic situations like his on-and-off going relationship with Blair and his friends.
We have seen Chuck giving up his love for Blair, because he wants to see her happy but that sacrifice is the one that changes Chuck forever, as he starts to getting down on an emotional level and realizing that he wants to be a better person to his friends and family, by opening up himself to people instead of filling his body with alcohol. Where is the complicated bad boy of Manhattan today? He is fighting for an answer and a reunion with the love of his life – but can our Bad Boy really make Queen B give up her prince and her “pact” with God? Well tonight, we’ll find out.
Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) began as a son who lived in the shadows of his family, already having his life decided regarding choice of collage and girlfriend but as we see Nate grow, we started seeing his struggle of finding his place on his own in society. His journey of finding his place in the world; follows with complicated relationships with women after he ends it with his childhood girlfriend Blair and his family going through their own drama. Trying to establish himself both personally and career-vise, he grows into a man but does sometimes find his way back to being a teenager and being just as dramatic as the other Upper Easter’s.
The biggest change in his life has been in this season as he found his way and became the editor-in-chief for Spectator, which eventually is revealed that his grandfather, William van der Bilt, was responsible for getting Nate there. While Nate was bothered that he was involved, but seemed OK in the end as he felt that this was right for him. But could there still be a little “Golden Boy” in Nate after all? He did have to go behind one of his best friends back in exchange for the help from Gossip Girl himself to discover what caused the horrible car accident that his other two best friends were in.
…and last but not least…”Gossip Girl”
We know that we love her – She is Gossip Girl (voiced by Kristin Bell), the anonymous person who keeps an special eye on the Upper East Side’s most known persons and serves sometimes as the shows biggest villain and oddly, as an ally for our teens at some points. Since the beginning till today, she has been a person who has revealed betrayals in certain relationships, raised suspicions on ongoing affairs and assisted of humiliating the show’s main characters.
There is a war between her and Serena, especially in this season after much suffering and pain that she has caused, in Serena’s POV – she decides to take the war to the next level as she launches her column through the Spectator. Our beloved Gossip Girl was put in check for a while after her list of every person that has tipped Gossip Girl off got leaked. Last week’s episode featured her return with the help of Nate himself that puts a stop to Serena’s column on the launching day in exchange for information on the car accident.
Gossip Girl remains alive but from where I see it – the war against Gossip Girl is far from over. Her blog remains a target for Serena for now but the search for Gossip Girl’s identity might one day be on S’s radar. After all, Serena & co did try once in the Season 2 finale – who is to say that S won’t try again?
A summarizing blast…
What have we learned after our trip to memory lane about S, B, D, C and N? “It girl” has come a long way from being the party girl that every man wants, to a somewhere confident and more assured woman but who is still haunted by ghosts of her past, schemes that are just around the corner and suddenly situations with her beloved ones. Regarding “Golden Boy” and his new career as an editor-in-chief, he sure has reached perhaps the longest than all of the stars of the Upper East, perhaps on the same point as “Lonely Boy” has.
But what has happened to these boys – “Lonely” is sure not so lonely anymore but instead a troubled young man who almost knows what he wants but at the same time, he has no idea what to do while “Golden” is like a two sides of the same golden coin, you never know if he truly is a matured man or a young boy who schemes but in a way for the right reasons. While Queen B and Bad Boy are still struggling of finding their way back to each other that will last more than just a few months, they are trying to move on and grow up – well a prince who turns out to be a bit of a frog and an act of sacrificing feelings that you still have, certainly hasn’t done much but it has definitely made them a bit wiser and mature.
Questions like “Will B. marry him or will C put a stop for it and finally get back with her?”, “What is up with S and D?” and “What in God’s name is Georgina Sparks doing back on the Upper East Side?!” might get answered, which I’m tuning in to find out. If you are dying to know and love the drama that is caused by the gossip, make sure to tune in for the 100th episode “G.G.”.
