If one were to make a list of memorable characters in television history, an almost certain character to be included would be All In The Family’s Edith Bunker. Played honestly with a shrill voice and a good heart by Jean Stapleton, she was a character that you couldn’t help but love at first sight — especially considering that she had to deal with her husband, Archie. Fortunately, Edith was played by an actress who was capable of standing up to fellow TV legend Carroll O’Connor who brought Archie to life.

Stapleton played the role for around ten years until finally leaving the show between the first two seasons of Archie Bunker’s Place, which is what All In The Family had evolved into in its later years, following the departures of Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers. In the storyline, Edith had died.

After leaving the role of Edith, Stapleton continued to have a very successful career which included some Emmy Awards.

Sadly, THR is reporting that Jean Stapleton has died at the age of 90. It sounds like she had a very long life full of rewards, and her audience was lucky to be able to see it.
