This one-disc set contains the 2010 special, which was written by series producer Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes. It’s a sci-fi take on the perennial Christmas story with the character of Kazran Sardick sitting in for Ebenezer Scrooge. Sardick is played by Dumbledore himself, Michael Gambon.
When a ship that counts Amy and Rory among its passengers comes scarily close to hitting Sardick’s home planet, it takes The Doctor to convince this mean old scrooge to free the skies so they can safely land. The Doctor takes a trip to Sardick’s past, where they make a new friend and Sardick learns even more about love and possible loss.
It’s a whimsical story, which sadly doesn’t have enough Amy and Rory, but it’s decent. Probably higher on my list than “The Runaway Bride” but still not coming close to the awesomeness that was “The Christmas Invasion.” I wish American television did the same thing with airing new episodes on Christmas Day, but fortunately, BBC America came through by airing this the same night as our friends in the United Kingdom got it.
As a bonus feature – which I imagine might not be on the Complete Series Six set – this disc includes “Doctor Who At The Proms,” a concert of Murray Gold’s Doctor Who music hosted by Karen Gillan. There are some surprise appearances, and there’s a great montage of past Doctor regenerations within. I hadn’t seen it before and I liked it.
Being only one disc, this set can possibly even be found for under 10 dollars at online retailers. Order yours from Amazon.com and support KSiteTV!
