Actor Obi Ndefo, who played Bodie Wells, the romantic partner of Joey Potter’s sister Bessie on Dawson’s Creek, has died at age 51. News of his passing came on Friday from some of his fellow alums that knew him at Yale. The Nigerian-born actor was described by those who knew him as “such a gift to our world.”

Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Gale Leery in several scenes with Ndefo on Dawson’s Creek, shared a tribute on Instagram.

“These words don’t come easy,” she wrote. “It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior.”

In 2019, Obi Ndefo lost both of his legs after being hit from behind by a DUI driver. Despite those challenges, he continued to be an inspiration for many and even guest starred on NCIS: Los Angeles in recent years. In addition to his role in 10 episodes of Dawson’s Creek as Bodie, he could be seen on such TV series as Stargate SG-1, The West Wing, and Star Trek: Voyager.

A cause of death for Obi Ndefo has not yet been reported by the media. Our sympathies to his friends and family who will surely be mourning him.
