Journalists were given a glimpse of a featurette for the Twin Peaks yesterday during the Showtime portion of the TCA press tour, and President/CEO David Nevins and President of Programming Gary Levine offered some insights about the return of the classic series which is due on Showtime next year.

For starters, Levine says that Twin Peaks will be back during the “early side of midyear” 2017.

“In terms of the number of episodes, it is a fluid process,” Levin adds. [David Lynch] co-wrote with Mark pFrost]. He directed every episode. He’s editing every episode. He’s scoring every episode. For him, it is a process of just sort of seeing how it evolves, and that organism continues to evolve. And until he feels like he’s kind of figured that out and then shows it to us, we actually won’t know,” he explains.

When Twin Peaks was pitched to Showtime, the executives were initially shown two scripts, but before production, they had seen all of the scripts. Levine is quick to point out, though, that the scripts presented were “not individual episodes.”

“David Lynch personally hand-carried binders that were about yea thick with the combined efforts of their writing, some of which they’ve been musing about on and off for 25 years. And so it was never a prescribed number of episodes in that way, and it continues to evolve through the filming and the editing process,” Levine explains.

Twin Peaks is due in 2017 on Showtime.
