The CW has swiftly canceled Tom Swift after airing only five episodes, Deadline is reporting.

The ratings for the show about a genius inventor who happens to be Black and gay was a spinoff of Nancy Drew, which will see its fourth season this Fall. Deadline notes that CBS Studios is looking to shop the series elsewhere.

2022 has not been a very good year for fans of The CW, especially for fans of shows starring LGBTQ+ lead characters. It may ultimately be an initiative toward broader programming once Nexstar obtains 75% control over the network, but it comes at the cost of big, daring swings taken by The CW under Mark Pedowitz. The fact that Tom Swift got on the air was an accomplishment — and the early end for the show means that ultimately it’s the fans of good TV who will miss out.

Reports have not seemed to have confirmed either way, but we assume The CW will air the remaining episodes this Summer.
