AMC has announced a series order for an untitled second spinoff of network cornerstone The Walking Dead, set to premiere in 2020.
“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any that The Walking Dead has dramatized thus far, and that is bound to excite one of the most passionate fanbases in television,” said David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “Scott has been an invaluable leader for the Universe since taking on the role of chief content officer, with a distinct and innovative vision for the franchise. Likewise, we’re excited to have Matt, who has been a crucial part of The Walking Dead family for over five years and penned many memorable episodes of TWD, at the helm of this original series.”
Co-created by Scott M. Gimple and Matt Negrette, with the latter set to showrun, the series will focus on two young female protagonists and chronicle the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. There’s no word yet on how this series will intersect with both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead or whether we’ll see any characters from the two Dead-verse shows pop up in this new venture.
Whatever this show ends up being called, it joins a scripted slate for AMC that includes both Dead shows, Better Call Saul, The Terror, Lodge 49, Preacher, and McMafia. The network is airing out the last episodes of The Son and Into the Badlands this spring, while Sundance Now/Shudder series A Discovery of Witches is getting a run on linear television, Killing Eve is being simulcast on AMC and BBC America, and Humans remains in limbo.
