CBS All Access has given a straight-to-series, 10-episode order to a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand.
“With over 400 million books sold around the world, Stephen King is one of our greatest living authors and The Stand is widely considered the crown jewel of his work. Millions of fans have been waiting for a modern interpretation that delivers on its depth, scope and ambition,” said Julie McNamara, exec vp originals at CBS All Access. “We are thrilled to be working with Stephen, Josh, Ben and a dedicated team working passionately to bring this brilliant material to life.”
Based on King’s seminal novel and developed for television by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), The Stand centers on a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The only hope for mankind lies with 108-year-old Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors, but the group will have to deal with powerful Randall Flagg, the Dark Man in their fight for hope, freedom, and a new day.
It’s been a busy time for King in terms of series adaptations of his written word, as Hulu’s Castle Rock and Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes are currently airing; HBO’s The Outsider and Amazon’s The Dark Tower are on deck; and Hulu’s 11.22.63, Spike TV’s The Mist, and CBS’s Under the Dome have all recently finished their respective runs. The Stand was previously adapted into a 1994 miniseries that starred Jamey Sheridan (Spotlight) as Randall Flagg and Ruby Dee (American Gangster) as Mother Abagail.
