Starz has released the first sneak peek from its upcoming limited series The Spanish Princess and in it, we see the cultural divide between the prim English aristocracy and headstrong Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon.
Based on The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory, with Emma Frost (The White Queen) and Matthew Graham (Ashes to Ashes) set as co-showrunners, The Spanish Princess tells the story of strong-willed Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope), the young Princess of Spain who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. Upon losing her husband Prince Arthur (Angus Irmie), Catherine sets about an audacious plan to woo the new heir to the throne – charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry.
The Spanish Princess follows fellow Starz limited series The White Queen and The White Princess in telling historical stories about and from the point of view of the women who lived it. With the help of an all-female directing team a’la Queen Sugar, the series sheds light on a previously untold corner of history: the lives of people of color, living and working in 16th century London.
In addition to Hope and Imrie, The Spanish Princess stars Dame Harriet Walter (The Crown), Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), Ruairi O’Connor (Delicious), Stephanie Levi-John (Striking Out), Aaron Cobham (Coronation Street), and Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons), among others.
The Spanish Princess premieres Sunday, May 5th at 8:00 on Starz.
