FOX has officially renewed post-apocalyptic comedy The Last Man on Earth for a fourth season. Though the show has drawn awards recognition and maintains solid L+7 ratings, there had been some question about whether FOX would let the show go amid their attempt to rebuild their schedule. However, The Last Man on Earth is too important to FOX the network and FOX the studio, both in terms of its external positives (awards, critic buzz) and its performance in a difficult slot on the schedule.

From Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), who also stars, The Last Man on Earth tells the story of Phil Miller, a lonely man who returns to his hometown almost a year after a deadly virus spreads across Earth. On the edge of killing himself, Phil subsequently acquires a quirky, oddball group of friends and finds the support system he needed to go forward.

In addition to Forte, The Last Man on Earth stars January Jones (Mad Men), Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers), Mel Rodriguez (Getting On), Mary Steenburgen (Back to the Future Part III), and Cleopatra Coleman (Step Up Revolution). The series joins a comedy slate for FOX that includes The Simpsons, Family Guy, and newly ordered comedies Ghosted and LA to Vegas.

The season finale of The Last Man on Earth aired earlier this week on FOX. The network will be revealing its plans for next season on Monday, May 15th; you can check out what KSiteTV thought their schedule could look like here.
