Syfy has announced that space drama The Expanse has been renewed for a third season, which is set to premiere in 2018.

The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”

Along with The Magicians and 12 Monkeys, The Expanse was part of Syfy’s recent rebrand toward harder science fiction, which, while not producing a breakout ratings hit on the level of an American Horror Story or Game of Thrones, has garnered the network a slew of critically praised dramas that hew closer to its Battlestar Galactica-era past. Plus, the foundation of that rebrand has proven to have some staying power, with 12 Monkeys having been renewed for a fourth and final season today and The Magicians becoming one of Syfy’s top-rated dramas this season.

Based on the novel series of the same name, The Expanse takes place in a future where the Solar System has been colonized and stars Shohreh Aghdashloo (Grimm), Steven Strait (Magic City), and Frankie Adams (Wentworth).

The Expanse airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on Syfy.
