Amazon has set a premiere date for well-received comic drama The Boys. The series, which was renewed for a second season prior to its first season being released, will return Friday, September 4th.
Rather than releasing the entire second season at once, Amazon will unveil the first three episodes first before putting out one episode per week through October 9th. Considering the success of The Boys, this could be a way to help prevent subscriber churn while steadily releasing fresh content in the wake of COVID-19 production delays. If the streamer’s bench is looking shallow and they don’t have much in the way of fall shows due to COVID, extending The Boys would buy them a little time to figure things out.
Based on the comic book of the same name from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The series follows the conflict between the vigilante Boys, hellbent on keeping the corrupted heroes under control, and corporatized The Seven.
The Boys stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Antony Starr (Banshee), Erin Moriarty (Blood Father), Dominique McElligott (Hell on Wheels), Jessie T. Usher (Survivor’s Remorse), and Laz Alonso (L.A.’s Finest).
