Thus far in her writing career, Jane has had to not only share intimate parts of herself that she never thought she’d expose on such a wide platform, she’s been forced to be more creative with how she approaches issues of politics and social justice. It’s a far cry from the buttoned-down journalism she thought she would be doing, but her brief time in the saddle at Scarlet has been a good thing for Jane, pushing her out of her comfort zone and making her realize that there’s more than one way to convey information to people. However, for as much as Jane might’ve learned about journalism thus far in her journey, what happens when she makes her biggest mistake yet?
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Jane pens an article about a woman who left a cushy finance job to become an exotic dancer. What seemed like an interesting topic to explore, issues of commodification of sexuality and respectability politics, turns sour, though, when the subject of the article threatens to sue both Jane and Scarlet. Of course, the magazine’s legal team will likely be able to keep the case out of court, preventing further public embarrassment, but that’s not the issue; the issue is that a young writer like Jane cannot bring this type of negative attention on Scarlet. Considering how few pieces she’s contributed to the magazine thus far, she has to be especially careful while writing about potentially invasive topics and extra sensitive when dealing with those whose lives will be opened up for a worldwide audience. Not doing her due diligence, or inserting too much of her own judgment into the piece, leaves her open to losing the position she’s worked all her life to attain.
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Sutton’s excitement grows as the next step in her career is on the horizon, while Kat question whether she’s relationship material for anyone after what happened with Adena.
The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on Freeform.
Will this brush with the Scarlet legal department scare Jane off from exploring more sensitive subjects? Could Sutton really already be on the edge of upward mobility after finally breaking the seal on her fashion career? What will it take for Kat to cast her demons aside and make the leap with Adena?
