    Review: Supernatural’s “Scoobynatural” Is A Must-Watch

The long-awaited mashup between Supernatural and Scooby Doo airs tonight on The CW, nearly a year since it was first announced during The CW’s upfront presentation in May 2017.

    Is it worth the wait?

    Absolutely.

There’s a lot to be said about the episodes in which Supernatural can get very meta. “The French Mistake” saw Sam and Dean transported to a world where they were Jared and Jensen; “Changing Channels” saw them inside other TV show scenarios. This time, though… they go into an episode of Scooby Doo (specifically, “A Night of Fright is No Delight” from 1970.) If you’re not a regular viewer of Supernatural, it’s okay, as this installment is very standalone; all you need to have is a familiarity with Sam, Dean, and Cas and you’re good to go.

Watching this episode, I realized that I’m pretty much the same age as Dean Winchester, so of course, we have the same nostalgia for cartoons. Scooby was an important part of my childhood as it was Dean’s. It’s nice to see an adventure where Dean especially is enjoying himself. But best of all: The show made me remember how much I loved Scooby Doo, as it’s a loving tribute to a series that is nearing its 50th birthday. I won’t lie; after watching this episode I did a total Scooby YouTube binge. Maybe soon I’ll finally get around to watching Mystery Incorporated as I have wanted for years.

Will Scooby Doo mesh well with a world where characters lose their heads — literally? Seeing that mixture and those differences is part of the fun. And I’m happy to say, minus a Dean moment at the end of the episode, I didn’t feel dumb while watching it. Again, it was just plain fun, and there’s a lot of commentary on the things that a lot of us think when watching the show (a.k.a., Fred is a tool.)

There’s a lot of TV to pick from on Thursday nights, especially, but I can say without hesitation that “Scoobynatural” is the show that will be the most fun tonight.

Supernatural “Scoobynatural” airs at 8PM ET/PT tonight (March 29) on The CW. Browse KSiteTV for more features related to the episode!
