CBS has opted to cancel praised comedy Superior Donuts after two seasons, the network confirmed today.

Superior Donuts kind of exemplifies CBS’s recent comedy struggles, as they have a number of series that are good retainers of a good lead-in but not enough that could lead an hour on their own. With there being no option of expanding comedy hours for drama-heavy CBS, this was a season where they were going to have to thin their comedy slate of those shows if there was any chance of ratings growth. Superior Donuts was still a ways from syndication, so it didn’t have ancillary income to fall back on, and CBS has done the leg work to become more inclusive with its pilot casting, lessening the show’s value to the network.

Donuts isn’t the only CBS comedy that will be cancelled, though. Fellow Monday shows 9JKL and Living Biblically will also be axed as the network looks to revamp its comedy lineup and put more comedies it owns in the syndication pipeline.

The series finale of Superior Donuts is set to air Monday, May 14th at 9:00 on CBS.
