Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the men who developed Smallville for The WB over a decade ago, are writing and developing a MTV drama series based on the Shannara series of fantasy novels by Terry Brooks. If MTV likes the script, they will go forward with a series with a pilot directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man).
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday, mentioning that if the series is a go, the first season will be based on the second title in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara. The Shannara series takes place thousands of years after civilization’s destruction, with the descendants of the Shannara family who are empowered with ancient magic.
Shannara will reunite Gough and Millar with Susanne Daniels, who was a major figure at The WB when Smallville was being developed.
“I am thrilled to be working with the Smallville creators, Al and Miles, again along with the amazingly talented Jon Favreau,” Daniels said at THR. “We feel that the Shannara novels are a perfect fit for MTV, as this type of fantasy genre has continuously proved to resonate with our audience.”
