Secrets and Lies sees its first season finale tonight – you can find some promotional images from the finale here – as the audience will ideally learn who killed Tom and whether or not Ben Crawford (Ryan Phillippe) actually did it. An although that mystery is over – don’t expect that to necessarily mean it’s the end of the show, which has done well in the ratings.
“The mystery of the Ben Crawford and who killed Tom will be resolved at the end of this season,” Executive Producer Barbie Kligman said at the television critics’ press tour back in January, prior to the show’s premiere. “And, hopefully, in subsequent seasons we’ll have a different mystery. The only ongoing mystery is Detective Cornell as we sort of unpeel the layers of who she is,” she said, implying that Juliette Lewis will continue to be a part of the show.
In retrospect, did Ryan Phillippe second-guess his character’s actions?
“A little bit, yeah, a little bit,” Ryan admitted. “But I think that speaks to the nature of the situation the guy is in, and who knows how to make the right decision in circumstances like these? And also, you don’t want to judge the character you’re playing so much. On this project, I worked from the inside out because I’m a father, because I’ve dealt with odd, like, celebrity, you know, public media‑based things. There were things that I related to and connected to on that level. But yeah, I mean, I guess that was sort of my point of connection to it. And even if I questioned sometimes choices Ben made, it was perfectly consistent, considering the nature of his situation,” he said.
The Secrets and Lies season finale airs tonight (May 3) at 9PM ET/PT on ABC. A decision on whether or not there will be a Season 2 will most likely be announced sometime prior to ABC’s 2015-2016 schedule announcement on May 12.
