Multiple trades are reporting that Netflix and Greg Berlanti’s production company are near a script-to-series commitment deal for a live-action TV series based on characters from Scooby-Doo!
Berlanti Productions was, of course, behind the “Arrowverse” group of shows and also adapted shows from the Archie Comics universe in series such as Riverdale. Interestingly, this deal is going to Netflix and not the Warner Bros.-owned Max streamer… but then again, the farther away this new project gets from Velma, the better, most likely. Netflix recently released the first season of Berlanti Productions’ Dead Boy Detectives.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy Bebop) will be writing the script and serve as Executive Producers alongside Midnight Radio’s Andre Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will be Executive Producers as well, and Jonathan Gabay and Adrienne Erickson are credited as Co-Executive Producers.
It will be interesting to see what a live-action Scooby-Doo! series will look like, as well as the tone. Will it be dark and spooky like Riverdale? Will Scooby be CG, or just a dog? Will Velma’s girlfriend Marcie show up? Will it be as good as Mystery Incorporated? Where’s Flim Flam? We’ll have to see what happens when Old Man Dithers’ mask is removed and the show premieres.
