Review
“Runaways” starts out slow, but explodes into a much faster pace, going so quickly it makes us speechless.
It’s a little strange to have this kind of story so close to the end of the run, now that we know the disappointing news about the future of Young Justice, but it’s forgivable considering the circumstances. The episode focused on some of the abducted teenagers, like Static and Tye. While I didn’t quite care as much for some of them, it was actually intriguing to get an episode that showed us more about these people and their powers. I was most intrigued by Tye/Apache Chief in the episode, not only because of his powers, but also because he finally found out the secret his best friend Jaime had been hiding all this time.
The other teenagers were fun to watch, but as characters, they weren’t as interesting as Static or Tye. It could be because they weren’t as engaging as characters, though they were, at least, more interesting than the Terror Twins last season. The return of Red Volcano was a fun one, though. I love the Red Robots on the show, and I wish that Red Tornado could have been there for this one. But at the same time, it felt a little nostalgic to have the teens fighting Red Volcano, harkening back to the fights of season 1.
The revelation that Green green helping Blue in last week’s episode was nothing but a trick was somewhat expected, but still shocking. If Impulse had seen this, he would probably be banging his head on a wall. The episode kept it well-concealed; I really thought that his attitude was just a big boost of confidence after the Scarab was muted. I knew Blue would bring on the apocalypse through his own making, but I hadn’t figured that Green was actually rebooting the Scarab. At this point we have three dangerous Beetles who are working with the Reach, and I can only suspect an epic showdown in the final episodes.
Overall, “Runaways” was a great episode that started slowly, but stepped on the gas pedal within seconds and threw me off the seat.
Odds & Ends
- I never imagined robots like Red Volcano to be as whiny as he was in this episode, but it was kind of humorous.
- With six episodes left, the Justice League better be back before the end. The amount of time they’ve been away is starting to get ridiculous.
- Once again kids, even if Lex Luthor thinks he is being played by the enemies, you can’t and never should trust him when he tries to give a helping hand. Superboy and Arsenal should had taken this into account as well. Clearly, the “don’t take candy from strangers” lesson doesn’t exist in this universe.
- Why did the Reporter sound surprised when he said,”You are Blue Beetle?!” I don’t think there are that many beetle-looking heroes flying around, as far as I understand, neither Black nor Green Beetle’s presence is in the public knowledge. It sounded really silly.
- Maybe it’s just me, but they really used the word “meat” and “flesh” a lot of times in the episode. Maybe they were referring to Jaime’s “meat” suit being used?
Young Justice airs on Saturdays, 10:30 AM on the DC Nation block on Cartoon Network.

The reporter was surprised reacting to Blue Beetle because he was familiar with Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle. I doubt Jaime gave too many interviews but this implied that there was a Beetle legacy in this animated universe.
Besides, keep in mind that, unlike the Justice League, the YJ teens are supposed to be a covert operation team. Until recently, the public didn’t even know of their existence.
