The notion of a show that has a sci-fi twist but isn’t necessarily considered sci-fi is something special, and VH1 has accomplished that with Hindsight, a new hour-long scripted series that premieres tonight (January 7) at 10PM.

Written by Emily Fox, Hindsight focuses on Becca (Laura Ramsey), a woman who is about to get married to a childhood friend, years after the failure of her first marriage to a charmer named Sean (Craig Horner). Her new fiancee, Andy (Nick Clifford), is sweet… but it’s definitely a different feeling than what she had the first time she walked down the aisle.

(Through a series of events, Becca passes out in an elevator and wakes up in 1995 on the eve of that first wedding. The show explores whether or not she will re-do her past mistakes or if she will take her life in a new direction.

Laura Ramsey is so good as the series’ lead, Becca, and I was very impressed how they were able to present her (and others) at two different parts of their lives. Makeup, visual effects… whatever was done, worked. There is one thing that makes Becca even better, though, and that’s her best friend Lolly (Sarah Goldberg), who has a fun perspective on life. Something happened between Becca and Lolly to end their friendship sometime between 1995 and 2015… but we aren’t sure what it is at this point. It’s obvious, though, that Lolly is the true [platonic] love of Becca’s life.

Legend of the Seeker’s Craig Horner plays Sean, the first husband of Becca from the past, and his charm and his accent might be hard for Becca to resist. Upon watching more we’ll see if she succeeds. Mention must also be made of Donna Murphy, who plays Becca’s mom, Georgie. Georgie might have a better go of life with Becca’s second time around as well.

Hindsight saw special meaning for me as a viewer because I graduated high school in 1995. I wasn’t cool, I wasn’t old enough to go out, but I imagine this is what the world was like then, and the soundtrack is amazing. If scripted TV is a way to get music channels to spotlight music from different eras, I’m very for it. But more than that, Hindsight made me happy, and I want to see more. Can you really ask for anything more from a show?

Look for Hindsight at 10PM tonight on VH1.
