Primeval is returning as a Canadian production, and a familiar face will be leading the series, according to a report at THR.

Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries’ Aunt Jenna) will be the lead actress of the new show, which is a co-production between Canada and the United Kingdom. Original producers Impossible Pictures are involved.

The show, which is sort of a spin-off in the Torchwood: Miracle Day and New Avengers vein, will be called Primeval: New World, which is actually a very similar title to the originally conceived name for the Torchwood Starz co-production. It sounds as though it’s existing in the same universe as the parent show as Andrew-Lee Potts is expected to make a guest appearance as Connor Temple.

Niall Matter, Miranda Frigon, Geoff Gustafson and Danny Rahim have also all been added to the show’s cast. We’re really looking forward to new information about this project – while the recently-canceled Terra Nova ultimately ended up being a dino-snore, the original Primeval was always good fun.

The show will air on Canada’s SPACE Channel. We’re not sure what the U.S. distribution plans are… if anyone knows, please drop a comment!
