Knight Rider #3.5 “Halloween Knight”
Originally aired October 28, 1984

Knight+Rider+Halloween+10Craig Byrne: October, 1984. I was six years old and Knight Rider was riding high. KITT got some cool new gadgets for the third season, and Patricia McPherson’s Bonnie returned to the show with the season premiere, which was a good thing since this one was pretty Bonnie-heavy.

“Halloween Knight” is an episode where Bonnie sees a murder in her new apartment complex, and it’s littered with hauntings including a floating red demon head, randomly running water, and the classic Norman Bates house. This ode to all things spooky is also convenient, as that particular Bates house is on the Universal studio lot. Nods like a character named “Norman Baines” also permeated this story, if the house wasn’t anvilicious enough.

What makes “Halloween Knight” stand out for me is that it scared the living crap out of my 6-year-old self. I’d have nightmares about that floating red demon head, which probably happened to others my age who were watching the show which was usually family-friendly. The way it spoke – backwards, I believe – creeped me out. That said, as terrified as I was, when NBC re-aired it, I totally watched it again.

Now that I, like that episode, am in my thirties, “Halloween Knight” isn’t as scary as it used to be, but it is a fun chance at a “Bonnie episode” which the show rarely did, and it’s an episode that’s stuck with me for all of those years, so they must have spooked something right.
