Pitch star Dan Lauria has revealed that FOX has cancelled the family-friendly baseball drama after one season. The cancellation isn’t that big of a shock, as the series was saddled with a weak, incompatible lead-in in a tough time slot and never found any kind of ratings footing. Though it generated some positive critical attention, Pitch was never acclaimed enough for a reach renewal, not when it’s a serialized show that would’ve had a nine month hiatus had it been renewed and not when FOX never seemed all that positive about it, particularly compared to how they felt about fellow freshman The Exorcist.
From Dan Fogelman (This Is Us), Pitch told the story of young pitcher Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), who becomes the first women in Major League Baseball. The 10-episode first season chronicled the wave Ginny’s entrance into the league made, as well as the relationships she formed with her teammates.
In addition to Bunbury and Lauria, Pitch starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Franklin & Bash), Mark Consuelos (Kingdom), and Tim Jo (The Neighbors). The series is one of very few shows to be cancelled so far this season, joining a short list that includes Time After Time and Doubt.
The series finale of Pitch aired this past December on FOX.
