FOX has confirmed that freshman multi-cam Outmatched has been cancelled.
During its one and only season, the series averaged a 0.56 in the 18-49 demo, making it a fairly decent retainer of Last Man Standing, which had a soft ratings season in 2019-20. However, Outmatched had poor reviews and little non-linear interest. Combine that with the already cancelled Deputy building off of it more often than not and FOX not needing as much scripted due to coronavirus and there was little chance the show was coming back.
The cancellation of Outmatched means that serial killer drama Prodigal Son is the lone FOX scripted series awaiting renewal news. That series had been a strong performer in non-linear, making up for okay but uninspiring L+SD ratings, and features big names in Michael Sheen and Bellamy Young, so there’s motivation to bring the show back. What’s kept it in limbo this long is trying to account for Sheen’s busy schedule.
From Lon Zimmet (I’m Sorry, LA to Vegas), Outmatched followed blue-collar Atlantic City couple Miles (Jason Biggs) and Kay (Maggie Lawson) as they tried to raise their four children – three of whom were certified geniuses.
In addition to Biggs and Lawson, Outmatched starred Tisha Campbell (Martin) and Finesse Mitchell (Saturday Night Live).
