When a TV network sends out an advance screener of something, I usually assume that it means that a very good episode of whatever show is coming and they want to get the word out. Earlier this week, I received an early copy of this week’s episode of Nikita, as it seems many others did, and I definitely understand why they wanted to give it some extra attention.

I know I’m going to echo myself here, but Nikita is a show that I’ve had some trouble connecting with. I’d like to think the show’s producers and network are aware of that lack of connection because it seems the show has been evolving ever since its first episode. They’re upping the ante for certain characters and it seems they are making other interactions more interesting as time goes on. In “Covenants,” tonight’s episode airing at 9PM on The CW, we pick up right where the last new episode left off, and we follow Nikita and Michael, particularly, through an adventure full of revelations and double crossing. There are even some flashback sequences that “Mikita shippers” will really enjoy.

Which is not to say this episode – or the series – has become perfect. The storyline with Alex finding and possibly leaving what seems to be a normal romance didn’t seem that easy to connect to for me, as someone who hasn’t tuned in for a few weeks. And I’ve said this one before, too: I don’t know what it is, but no matter what dastardly things Percy does, I don’t fear him or really get a strong emotion about him as I did from a similar character like Arvin Sloane on Alias. I get the feeling – and it’s broadcasted and said – that he’s this big bad guy, but I seem to get irritated more than I seem to hate, and since that’s a major conflict of the series, that doesn’t really work for me. One villain I do love on this show is Melinda Clarke’s Amanda; sadly, she’s not present this week, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that I look forward to her next appearance.

As this is Nikita, there is action. And this – the first new episode in several weeks – starts the show off toward what I think will be a thrilling finale. The show has gotten quite good, and for the most part, it’s a great spot to jump on to finish this ride into what I think could be a very good last run leading into what hopefully will be a second season for the show.

Nikita airs tonight at 9PM following a new Vampire Diaries.
