A Green Lantern TV series has been in development for over a year, and recently, DC Studios head James Gunn has confirmed that Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, LOST) has joined the team at the show, which is currently being called Lanterns.
“Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof. A hearty welcome to Chris and
Damon Lindelof as they join the DC Studios family (no welcome necessary for old Tom King, who has been here nearly since inception),” Gunn posted on Threads.
A Green Lantern project was in development for what was then called HBO Max but it never got to the point of filming, despite extensive pre-production work and even casting taking place. This project, announced with DC’s first phase, first came to be known in late 2022.
“It’s terrestrial-based, it’s got two of our favorite Green Lanterns – Hal Jordan and John Stewart… it plays a really big role in the main story that we’re telling across our film and Television. This is a very important show for us,” DC’s Peter Safran said when the series was first announced, offering True Detective is seen as an inspiration. “It leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on ‘Precinct Earth’,” Gunn added.
It is not yet known who will be playing John Stewart or Hal Jordan, but it’s pretty much assured that David Ramsey, who Arrowverse fans had tapped as John Stewart with their Diggle character, especially considering his cliffhanger, is not going to play the character, as this project has no connection to the Arrowverse. And of course, before all of this happens we will probably see our first Green Lantern in the new DCU in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman movie, where Nathan Fillion is playing Green Lantern Guy Gardner.
