For the first seven years of his life, the boy was hiding in plain sight, skirting the edges of our reality while acting as a pawn in the games of the subconscious. Though he is a real being whose linage to Tess is indeed biological, his existence has been of whispers and shadows, of being tangled in the business of cults, ambassadors, and multi-national corporations. He’s been a highly coveted weapon that’s essentially been passed back and forth, finding his mother only in her dreams while trying to save himself, and said value has inspired even more suitors looking to sweep him away. But aside from his mother, is there anyone whose intentions with the boy are wholly altruistic?

On the season finale of Falling Water, the race for the boy is on, as Tess laments another close call with her son, Taka attempts to track down the boy as a way to appease the Green (and bring his mother back from her catatonia), and Burton is faced with the next step in his plan to rescue the Woman in Red. Complicating matters are Bill, who’s hidden his true reason for being interested in Tess, and Anne-Marie, bound and determined to keeping the boy from falling into the hands of the Green’s enemies, in addition to the fact that it’s damn near impossible to hide the boy from those who seek to procure him. Even if Tess manages to be face-to-face with her son for the first time, even if Taka makes peace with the state of his mother, and even if Burton is able to free the Woman in Red from Aeskyton without having to turn him over, there’s still the matter of taking the boy somewhere the Green, Bill, White Sand, and various worldly ambassadors can’t find him, which is made all the more difficult given their adeptness at navigating the border between consciousness and the subconscious. Therefore, admirable though it may be, is Tess ultimately fighting a war she has no realistic way of winning?

The season finale of Falling Water airs Thursday at 10:00 on USA.

Who will be in possession of the boy by the end of the episode? What specific powers do you think the boy has that makes him so coveted? Do you think it’s even possible that the Green could help Kumiko in exchange for Taka retrieving the boy?
