I’m probably preaching to the choir here when I point out that Young Justice is a very, very good series. In fact, it is so well-written it just might be one of the best-produced comic book adaptations currently on TV.
Young Justice got off to a decent start, but unfortunately, the Cartoon Network’s scheduling kind of killed the momentum for me a bit. Thankfully, when the show finally returned for the last episodes of Season One, the momentum quickly rebuilt the excitement. I might go so far as to say the second half of Season One is better than the first.
There are moments that change DC history ever-so-slightly, like the person who eventually becomes Doctor Fate. New characters start hanging around on a more regular basis, like Zatanna or even the Milestone character Rocket. There are also things that only the more nerdy of us would get – like a transporter that looks like a police box and a web-slinging villain who sounds spectacular…. we can thank Peter David for those. But also — and I know my nerd card is showing here too — these are the versions of the characters that I love. Sure, Kid Flash is Wally and not Bart, Robin is Dick and not Tim… but many of the characters are more like their pre-“New 52” counterparts and that makes me happy. Superboy/Conner Kent gets a particularly good arc that involves Lex Luthor and some patches that make him more “super” for short periods of time.
Also a running thread in the latter half of Season 2 is the storyline about a traitor on the time, and like a live action prime time series, this leads right into a big season finale that also leaves us with some cliffhangers.
The “Season 1, Part 2” DVD set for Young Justice contains 14 episodes, in a widescreen format, and it’s already available on DVD. If you’re a fan of the DC Comics universe of characters, this is the best way to see the show – back to back, no commercials, no 6-month breaks between shows. If you’ve never seen YJ before, you’re in for a very pleasant surprise. And now – Cartoon Network – please bring the show back already!
You can order the DVD from Amazon.com and support KSiteTV at the same time by going here. At under $15 it’s a great deal.
