We have all had people in our lives that we lost in times past, and if they returned, our lives would change, as we move on eventually, even if it is a tough process. That is one of the themes of Resurrection, the new ABC drama that premiered to big ratings last season. It’s an identifiable concept in a science fiction wrapper, but at its core, it is a family drama with an associated mystery.
ABC Studios released the first season of Resurrection on DVD last week, and we have a review of the set, which contains all eight episodes of Season One. Enjoy:

The Episodes: One advantage to having a whole season at your fingertips is that when the episode is over, you really can just hop to the next one after a cliffhanger. Resurrection is one of those shows like a bag of chips – you can’t have just one. New layers are peeled back, but for every mystery solved, another one surfaces. There are some great performances in this show, with one of my favorites coming from Kurtwood Smith (That 70’s Show) which goes far beyond the range one would have ever expected of Red Foreman. Frances Fisher as his wife Lucille is also a find. And speaking of resurrections, remember Samaire Armstrong from The O.C.? She’s back, and a part of this very talented cast.
At only eight episodes, this set is very easy to get through and a great way to spend an afternoon or a weekend binge-watching.

Resurrection is not a show where all reunions are happy – some, who have already coped with a loss, have finally learned to move on, only to have that wound re-opened. Other returns may have more violent implications.
The Extras: There are some featurettes that come off as press kit material, but that’s better than nothing, and when this was all put together, they might not have known how well-received the show would be. Bloopers and deleted scenes are also among the bonus materials. It’s not a lot, but it’s only a 2-disc set, so there’s only so much space.
The Packaging: I understand that the box art is meant to be mysterious, but it really doesn’t show you what the show is about. I may have preferred a cast photo, though there’s some nice artwork on the back cover, the insides, and the box art.
Is It Worth It? YES. ABC hyped this show quite a bit at midseason, but the hype paid off. I know there is the argument that ratings went down as the season went on, but also consider the notion that there was SO MUCH ON Sunday nights. Getting this DVD set is a good way to be caught up before Season 2 begins. I know I will be watching.
