ABC’s Nashville is an entertaining show centered around two really good actors who play two powerhouse characters – there’s Connie Britton as the longtime country star Rayna Jaymes, and then Heroes favorite Hayden Panettiere plays the young rising star Juliette Barnes. The series explores their rivalry against the backdrop of a town where country music is king and dreams are either realized or broken.
The complete first season was recently released on DVD, and fans of the show should love it. Here are some thoughts on individual aspects of the set.
The Episodes: Every episode from Season 1 is included here. I admit – I haven’t been able to get into it the same way I got into, say, Scandal. The performances are good, and as I mentioned, there are actors that I like… and I usually like soapy elements… but something didn’t get me to connect the way I should. It’s a good show, and I recognize that… but with so much TV on the landscape, it’s shows like this that are often missed.
Thankfully, with DVD I have the time to properly watch the entire first season and maybe fall in love with these characters some more, which is good since Season 2 just started on ABC. And of course, people who love the show will love this set.
The Extras: A lot of the extras on this set are devoted to country music, including the Stella sisters and an “On The Record” featurette about the show’s music. While I liked these, I would love to have seen more interviews with cast and creators talking about what makes the show happens. Deleted scenes are great, as is the blooper reel, though I noticed a distinctive lack of Connie Britton in the bloopers. Maybe she just rarely messes up? Either way, I wish I had seen more of her there.
Graphics & Sound: This looks good, and sounds good. The latter is important, because, you know, music.
All in all, if you’re a fan of the show, or simply just curious, the set is worth checking out. You can find it on Amazon.com here.
