The Complete First Season DVD and Blu-ray sets for TNT’s The Last Ship arrived this week, just in time for the start of Season 2 which premieres on the network June 21.
The two-disc Blu-ray set has a ton of features, getting audiences into the world of The Last Ship while at the same time giving buyers a good value considering there are only ten episodes within.
So, what did we think of the Blu-ray set?
The Episodes: All ten episodes of Season 1 are featured on this set, and this, more than most Blu-ray sets I’ve seen, really seems to take advantage of the format. The picture is crisp and the colors are vibrant, which is good since the episodes rely a lot on themes of red and blue colors throughout. When presented together, The Last Ship Season 1 can be seen as a bit of a ten-episode “movie” with action, heroes being heroes, villains being villains, heroes who are thought of as villains, villains who are thought of as heroes, and more. Eric Dane is at the show’s center, playing Captain Tom Chandler, and he brings a great emotional range on top of his ability to portray command. Across the board, the cast is great, with actors such as Rhona Mitra as part of the series. I was also impressed by some of the guest stars, including the always delightful Alfre Woodard.
The Extras: The producers of this set must have known that people would like special features, because it’s full of them. There are “Inside The Episode” features, commentaries, interview featurettes, and more. I will warn, though, that if you haven’t seen The Last Ship Season 1 already, do not watch the season finale with commentary. Sadly, I made that mistake, and some major plot points were ruined for me, killing the emotional impact. I may have been asking for it, watching a behind-the-scenes view like that, but it wouldn’t have killed the commentators to talk about major events AFTER they transpire on screen.
Possibly my favorite of the extra features is what might be all if not most of the Last Ship panel at the 2014 Comic-Con International in San Diego. Not only were there a lot of great behind-the-scenes stories and it gave the chance to get to “know” the actors more – it also gave me a better understanding of the show.
Is It Worth It? It depends. If you’re a fan of The Last Ship already, absolutely. If you’re looking to try out something new, it is convenient to watch them all in one sitting, though it might not be the highest show on my recommendation list. At under $20, even for the Blu-ray, it’s certainly not a waste of money, especially since even the extra features should value at that much.
