The tenth season of Supernatural hit DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday, September 8, and you might notice this review is a couple of days later than that. Why? There’s a lot of good stuff on this set, and I had to bask in the glory of Episode 200 “Fan Fiction” again before properly writing a review.
Now that that’s out of the way… here’s the review!
The Episodes: The highlight of Season 10, for me, was of course the 200th episode. I know for some it might have been controversial, but for me — someone who hasn’t seen all 200 episodes of the series — I saw it as a loving tribute to the fandom and to what the show has accomplished. There’s something familiar about Supernatural that makes it endure for so long, and the 200th episode embodies that.
All 23 Season 10 episodes are on this set, and the picture quality and sound are flawless. This season, there are dealings with the Mark of Cain, and the show continues to kill off beloved characters which I’m not too happy about, but it’s still, as per usual, a great ride inside a classic Impala. I know these shows hit Netflix and TNT, but there’s something about the whole high definition, at my fingertips thing.
The Extras: This might be the most loaded Supernatural set ever. There’s a great featurette about the making of “Fan Fiction” that I really enjoyed. What didn’t go over as well for me was a “Supernatural Fans” piece, which clocked in at like an hour but felt like five. I know there’s another Supernatural fan documentary project coming, and I hope it’s better than this one, which spent way too much time with its individual subjects. I’m sure the people on the featurette love being part of the history there, but their 20-minute stories could have easily been consolidated to 4 or 5. It’s nice to see though that the actors and the crew are so appreciative of their fans, and those fans have made some really fantastic creations.
There are bloopers, which again, appear to be more made for the crew to enjoy instead of the fan base, but it’s still fun. The Supernatural panel from Comic-Con 2014 is present, and the “Very Supernatural Special” recapping the “road so far” is included, as is a featurette about the Mark of Cain story. There are audio commentaries, though sadly not one on “Fan Fiction.” Finally, there are some deleted scenes.
Packaging & Design: The packaging is consistent with past seasons, and I like it. Despite being Blu-ray, there’s some cool disc art, and I liked that too.
Is It Worth It? Hours of extras in addition to 23 episodes? Sign me up! Yes, it’s worth it.
