    Counterpart Cancelled by Starz

Counterpart creator Justin Marks revealed on his Twitter that the Starz espionage thriller won’t be returning for a third season, though series studio MRC is said to be shopping it around to other outlets.

Though it had a cult audience and its share of supporters in the TV critic community, the news comes as no surprise given the show’s weak ratings and lack of major buzz. The series was also up against it due to Lionsgate purchasing Starz and subsequently wanting to put more of its own series on the airwaves.

From Marks (The Jungle Book), Counterpart followed Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons), a low level player at a Berlin-based UN spy agency. After discovering that his agency is guarding the secret of crossing into parallel dimensions, Howard finds himself thrust into a world he never knew exist, one in which his life is on the line and one where the only person he can trust is a near-identical copy of himself from a parallel world.

In addition to Simmons, Counterpart stars Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense), Nazanin Boniadi (Homeland), Harry Lloyd (Manhattan), Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella), and Ulrich Thomson (Banshee)

With the cancellation of Counterpart, Starz’s current scripted slate includes Power, Outlander, American Gods, Sweetbitter, and Vida, with 2019 to see the debuts of Gregg Araki’s Now Apocalypse and period drama The Spanish Princess.

You can take a look at the upcoming series finale of Counterpart, set to air Sunday, February 17th at 8:00, below.
