Hulu has given a straight-to-series order to Conversations with Friends, it was announced Thursday.
“Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories. After bringing that to life in Normal People to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with Conversations with Friends. We are excited to continue our creative partnership with Sally, Element Pictures, Lenny and the BBC, which has been a dream collaboration,” said Beatrice Springborn, VP Content, Hulu.
Based on the Sally Rooney novel of the same name, with Alice Birch (Succession) serving as lead writer, Conversations with Friends follows two female Dublin college students forging an unexpected, strange, and sexually charged relationship with an older married couple, which results in a complicated pair of love triangles that upends their lives.
The series, already ordered by the BBC, marks the second collaboration between Rooney and Hulu, which platformed critically acclaimed romantic drama Normal People earlier this year. While the streamer doesn’t release ratings, Normal People has been a major word-of-mouth hit for them, also managing to sneak its way into the Emmy conversation. Therefore, it makes all the sense in the world for Hulu to want to delve more into Rooney’s oeurve in an attempt to reconnect with the audience that made Normal People a hit.
Conversations with Friends joins a slate of upcoming dramas for Hulu that includes Marvel’s Helstrom, which follows the two progeny of a mysterious serial killer as they team up to hunt down the worst of humanity; horror anthology Monsterland; Jeff Bridges CIA vehicle The Old Man; beleaguered comic drama Y: The Last Man, which recently moved from FX to Hulu’s FX on Hulu programming hub; and Nicole Kidman limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, based on the novel of the same name.
