Freeform has announced that best friends comedy Alone Together has been picked up to series.
“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer,” said Freeform EVP programming Karey Burke. “Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10s as self-proclaimed 6s.”
From Esther Povitsky (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and Benji Aflalo (Not Safe with Nikki Glaser), Alone Together follows best friends Esther (Povitsky) and Benji (Aflalo) as they try to gain acceptance in today’s status-obsessed culture. The series joins a comedy roster that includes multi-cams Baby Daddy and Young & Hungry, as Freeform’s first single cam, Kevin From Work, was cancelled earlier this year.
It’s been a busy year for Freeform as they’re continuing to suss out their brand and try to pick shows that standout in an increasingly busy cable environment. The network didn’t unveil any new comedies this year, but of the four new dramas that debuted over the past 12 months, three (Recovery Road, Guilt, and Dead of Summer) ended up cancelled after one season. The other, Shadowhunters, has become something of a cornerstone for their new drama brand, with its second season to premiere Monday, January 2nd.
Will you be watching Alone Together? Do you think this is the type of single cam that can find an audience for Freeform? If not, what type of single cams do you want to see Freeform go after?
