NBC has opted to cancel hangout comedy Abby’s, it was confirmed today.
The series got off to a weak start in the ratings upon its debut earlier this spring and has only softened in the weeks since. It’s also not generated much in the way of critical or social media buzz, so even with the auspices involved, there was no surprise renewal to be found like A.P. Bio got last year. However, one has to wonder if the way it was rolled out (e.g. late spring premiere, soft lead-in, little promotion) could’ve had something to do with how invisible it was during its brief run.
From Josh Malmuth (New Girl) and executive produced by Mike Schur (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Abby’s took place at an unlicensed, makeshift bar in the backyard of former Marine sergeant Abby. The series followed the group of regulars at the bar who laughed together, commiserated together, and just tried to find a moment of peace in an increasingly busy world.
The series starred Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Neil Flynn, and Jessica Chaffin.
The series finale of Abby’s should air this summer on NBC.
