We just got back from the Merlin press room at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, where we spoke with visiting cast and creators of the popular U.K. import. It was Angel Coulby’s first visit to Comic-Con, so she will be one of the ones you’ll be reading about here at KSiteTV, but first, we’re going to shine a spotlight on the show’s best bad girl – or at least the actress who plays her, Katie McGrath.

For starters, Katie McGrath the person is very nice, but she enjoys playing a character who is not so nice. “Bad girls are far more fun than good girls, in my opinion,” she says, before explaining where we find Morgana when the show resumes.

“The most important thing is the time that she has spent off Camelot. There’s three years of a difference, and in those years, you discover that her worst fears have been realized. She’s been persecuted for being magical. You discover she’s been imprisoned, probably tortured by a character you’ll see later on in the season. And for her, when she gets out, it’s no longer just about being accepted for being magical, which is what she was in Season 4. It’s now about revenge. She wants to make everybody pay for what has happened to her. It’s a much darker driving force for her. She doesn’t just want her throne back. She wants everyone to feel what she’s felt,” she says.

Season 5 will see Morgana interacting with the other characters some more, including the series regulars and the Knights of the Round Table. “Season 4, you didn’t really see me with any of the other ones, but they, in the magical Merlin world, have figured out in very interesting ways which you’ll realize, that I get to go to Camelot and I get to interact with everybody,” she teases.

One reaction of Morgana’s that will be interesting to see is the aftermath of Guinevere now being Queen to Arthur’s King. “I think you remember from Season 4, that she had a real issue with Guinevere becoming Queen, because for her, that’s her role. She believes that that is her birthright. In all fairness, it is. She is Uther’s daughter. She is the eldest child. She should be the ruler. Aside from the fact that she would be a better ruler than Arthur, but whatever,” she jokes. “She does have difficulties with it. But for Morgana, she has got an overall goal, and she needs to do whatever it takes to get her end goal. Whether that means being nice to one person, forming alliances with another, doing underhanded, dirty things… all the time you have to remember with Morgana, her goal is revenge, and that’s what she’s thinking.”

Come back for more interviews soon, and remember you can talk about Merlin with other fans on the KSiteTV Merlin forum! A Season 5 premiere date has not been officially announced at this point to our knowledge, but we’ll post as soon as we know something!
