OWN has announced that romantic drama Love Is has been ordered to series and will premiere in 2018.
“I’ve dreamed of working with the Akils,” said Oprah Winfrey. “I’ve been a huge fan of their work since first viewing Girlfriends. They know just how to hit the cultural nerve to make you think and laugh at the same time.”
From Mara Brock and Salim Akil (The Game), Love Is follows a power couple as they navigate the intricacies of Black Hollywood. The series was previously under development at ABC, where it was a multi-camera comedy. This marks the latest move for a show that broadcast developed for 2017-18 following the Netflix series order for CW reject Insatiable, the ESPN airing of ABC comedy Jalen vs Everybody, and the nearing series order for Sony project Doomsday.
In addition to the CW-turned-BET football dramedy, the Akils are responsible for UPN-turned-CW sitcom Girlfriends, BET drama Being Mary Jane, and upcoming CW drama Black Lightning.
Love Is joins a scripted slate for OWN that includes prestige projects Queen Sugar and Greenleaf, as well as Tyler Perry vehicles The Haves and the Have Nots, If Loving You is Wrong, For Better or Worse, and Love Thy Neighbor.
