ABC has cancelled family comedy Dr. Ken after two seasons. Though the show was an okay performer, word leaked that it didn’t pitch a third season to the network, which meant that cancellation was more than a formality. With fellow multi-cam Last Man Standing cancelled, it’s as yet unclear what ABC will do with its first hour on Fridays.
Executive produced by Ken Jeong (Community), who also starred, Dr. Ken told the story of Dr. Ken Park, a wisecracking physician who works at a badly-funded HMO. The series focused on both his life at work and home, with his family including a therapist wife, a socially clueless son, and self-centered daughter. The show’s now-series finale was especially meta and found Dr. Park landing a small role on a TV show and forced to choose between his love of medicine and comedy.
In addition to Jeong, Dr. Ken starred Suzy Nakamura (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Tisha Campbell-Martin (Martin), Albert Tsai (Trophy Wife), and Dave Foley (Newsradio). The series was one of two Asian-American family comedies on broadcast television, with the other being fellow ABC series Fresh Off the Boat.
ABC will be revealing its plans for 2017-18 on Tuesday, May 16th. You can check out what KSiteTV thought they could do here.
